High School Ministry Dominican Republic Mission Trip 2017

Posted by Scott Boss on

The DR 2017 team is off to a great start with Young Life (YL) Expeditions in the Dominican Republic. This marks our 5th straight year partnering with YL Expeditions and working with our Dominican amigos to build Young Life Camp Pico Escondido. We have been able to see this camp completely transform over the years and see the places our hands have contributed to that transformation—places where Dominican teenagers have met the love of Christ.

Getting our Feet on the Ground

During our first few days in country, we attended a local church and worshiped in Spanish alongside our Dominican brothers and sisters. We followed that experience with our annual hike to the waterfall where memories and friendships are created. Last night we got a cultural dance lesson.

Getting our Hands Dirty

Now we are on our third day in the Dominican, so the hard work has started! We're jumping in with both feet to help build and transform Camp Pico Escondido into its best to proclaim the love of Christ. Our group has been split into three teams:

  1. A concrete bucket brigade preparing a mountainside debrief space for one of the most impactful tools at the camp: the low ropes course.
  2. A painting team preparing new guardrails for the oldest bunkhouse at the camp
  3. A deep cleaning team prepping all the spaces throughout camp to receive kids in the best and safest way possible.

With every bucket carried, every brush stroke, and every window cleaned a prayer is lifted for Christ to meet every heart that walks this sacred ground. Join us in prayer as our God is vast and able to fill the hearts of these kids.

Work at it with All Your Heart

As one of our students led our devotional last night, we were reminded of Paul's words in Colossians 3:23-24, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward." Our work here does serve the kids that will soon fill this camp but we remember that, ultimately, everything we do is for the Lord.

Prayer Requests
  • We are still in the early part of our trip with many amazing experiences to come. Please pray for our group to "gel" together and get comfortable enough to push past the surface in relationships.
  • Please pray for our students after we return to the Springs: May this trip be a catalyst for their own testimonies of Gods power in their life. Many will be asked why they spent their summer in the DR. Pray for those moments to be met with courage so that they can point to a hope that is only rooted in Christ.
