Leadership in 1894

Posted by Dale McClure on

This week's Global Leadership Summit, hosted for the first time here at First Pres, reminded us that "Everyone wins when a leader gets better."

What did leadership look like in the late 1800s, in the first few decades of our history?

This photograph of our elders was taken around 1894. Our pastor, Dr. Boyle, is seated in the front row with the clergy collar. To Boyle’s right is Dr. Arnold. To Boyle’s left is Judge Robert Douglass, who owned what is now called the Flying W Ranch. The man to the left of Douglas is John Lennox. His home is now a bed and breakfast inn on North Nevada, known as The Lennox House.

You can view this and other First Pres history photos during the month of August on our history wall, on the first floor between the library and the Lead Pastor's office.

In honor of First Pres' 145th birthday on August 17, a generous donor has offered to match any birthday gift given toward the completion of the Worship Center. Here's how you can give and have your gift matched:

  • Use the return envelope enclosed in the letter from Pastor Tim you received in the mail—mail it back, or drop it in the offering plate on Sunday.
  • Choose “Worship Center” next to the amount when you give online.
  • Text an amount and the words Worship Center to 719-297-2232 (example: “$100 Worship Center”).
