It’s a new year with new opportunities, new challenges and a new number to remember to write on our correspondence and in our checkbooks. 2018. It’s here, ready … or not. I don’t know about you, but I’m still getting used to the idea of it being twenty-anything. Wasn’t Y2K just a few years ago? And since we’re talking about it, can we all just agree to call this year by the short form: “twenty eighteen” rather than “two thousand and eighteen”? I mean, how far into the nineteen hundreds did they go still calling it one thousand nine hundred and whatever?
All right, now that I got that off my chest, I have to say that even though this year has a new number attached to it, there is a lot about today that doesn’t feel all that new. Last week was still last week, even though it was a different year. And unless we're trying out new Christmas presents, most of us are still driving the same cars, wearing pretty much the same clothes and going to the same jobs.
Most important, we know a God who is still the same. He is the same, yesterday, today and forever. And the God who came to us as an infant over two thousand years ago is the same God who makes us this amazing offer: to know Him personally.
This coming week in worship we will be closing out our “Brighter” series. Yes, you'll still see the same video before I get up to preach. And, yes, we will echo the theme that has been with us throughout the Advent Season: that Jesus is Brighter than anything else in the universe. This is the same Jesus who turned the world upside-down with the greatest surprise of all. He died for us. He was resurrected. And He now lives in victory and power, and He wants us to share in His victory and His power!
Here's a thing not to miss: This unchanging, timeless God wants to change you and me. So 2018 can truly be a year of new beginning, if we choose to “Believe in the Light” and give ourselves, our year and the rest of our lives to Him.
I hope to see you Sunday as we look more into how 2018 can be the best year yet!
