Who Knows? Jonah (Worship Center)

Who Knows? Jonah (Worship Center)

Apr 29, 2018

Passage: Jonah 3

Preacher: Jennifer Holz

Series: Who Knows? Seven Stories to Inspire

Category: Old Testament

Detail:

Jonah knows God and has been saved by God, but his heart is a stone-cold mess when it comes to those on the outside.

This week's sermon

Jonah was the reluctant prophet par excellence. We know his story. At its heart, this is a story about being in the hands of God even when we resist His purposes. God will not be frustrated in bringing about good things, even when we do all we can to resist. The lips of the king of Nineveh now pronounce our refrain with hope, “Who knows?" God might turn things around. Things might not end up the way they seem to be headed. With our hearts and our wills in God’s hands, who knows what God might bring next?

Jonah found it very difficult to live out God’s purposes. His ‘mission’ to preach destruction down on Nineveh failed—life came instead. God’s heart is for our salvation, found ultimately in Jesus Christ who spent three days under the earth to reemerge with God’s grace and salvation secured for all who will repent and turn to Him.

About This Series: Who Knows? Seven Stories to Inspire

The stories of the great heroes and heroines of the Bible inspire and instruct us in our own lives. Each one has a “who knows?” moment when God’s story seems to break into regular, everyday life—a critical moment offering a sense of calling or purpose. It’s as true for us as it was in ancient days. Who knows? Maybe God has plans to use you for His glory. Who knows? Maybe God put you where you are, with the influence you have, for a reason. Who knows? Maybe the things you suffer today will make sense in time. When God shows up, a sense of mysterious discovery enters our lives. Who knows what God has planned?
